Global X Cybersecurity ETF (BUG)
Price target: Members Only
The cybersecurity industry has been on a rollercoaster ride over the last few years as markets repriced high growth software names, reacted to massive outages like CrowdStrike’s 2024 incident, dealt with more sophisticated security threats, and most recently…started facing a new wave of challenges from AI threats, AI agents, and automation attacks.
We’ve been able to capture several trading opportunities from this volatility because cybersecurity stocks and ETFs can swing double digit percentage points in both directions. When sentiment is strong, the sector can move fast. When valuations get questioned, the pullbacks can be sharp. But despite all the ups and downs, our long term outlook on cybersecurity remains strongly bullish.
Why? Because cybersecurity is the backbone of the internet.
As the world becomes more digitized, more cloud based, more automated, and more AI driven, the attack surface only gets larger. Every new application, database, cloud workload, AI agent, employee device, payment system, and customer portal creates another layer that needs protection. That makes cybersecurity a core operating expense for modern businesses.
Forecasts show the industry growing at an annualized pace 9-12% through the end of the decade, which helps set a strong backdrop for a sector that already gone through a major valuation reset. The key difference this time is artificial intelligence…AI is not just creating demand for chips, data centers, power, and software. It is also creating demand for protection. Companies are rushing to deploy AI tools, copilots, and autonomous agents, but many are doing so before they fully understand the risks. This is why cybersecurity could become one of the more important “second-order” AI trades. The first wave of the AI trade was chips and infrastructure. The next wave could be the companies protecting that infrastructure.
Why $BUG ETF over an individual cybersecurity company
Cybersecurity is not one market. It is a stack that works in layers. Instead of trying to pick the single best cybersecurity company, BUG gives exposure to a basket of major players across the industry. Its top holdings include names like Fortinet, Palo Alto Networks, Okta, CrowdStrike, and Rubrik. That gives the ETF exposure to several different areas of cybersecurity, including network security, endpoint protection, identity, vulnerability management, cloud security, and data protection.
Why this cybersecurity breakout can last
Cybersecurity has spent years digesting valuation pressure, stock specific issues, and inconsistent investor sentiment. But the fundamental backdrop has arguably gotten stronger, not weaker. AI agents, cloud migration, geopolitical risk, ransomware, identity attacks, and data protection needs are all creating more urgency for businesses to invest in security. Investors are still focused on the companies building the AI economy. Soon, more attention may shift toward the companies protecting it.

Not all AI players are flashy and obvious. You’re familiar with names like Nvidia, Google, AMD…etc. in the AI space, but Thermo Fisher Scientific is also quietly making moves, utilizing the latest and greatest technology to enhance trial data and their business.
What Does Thermo Fisher Scientific Do?
Think of Thermo Fisher Scientific as the “Amazon” of life sciences, providing almost everything a laboratory needs, from $1 million microscopes to the tiny plastic tubes used to hold samples. The company is split into four segments: analytical instruments, life sciences solutions, specialty diagnostics, and laboratory products and biopharma services. Together, these make up a massive scientific research company, one that generates not of $40 billion in annual revenue.
Key Projects & Catalysts
- Nvidia Collaboration - in the past two years, we’ve seen semiconductors and data center companies enjoy massive rallies on the basis of their chips being sold and used by companies across different industries. One of those companies is Thermo Fisher, which is using Nvidia’s AI infrastructure to build “autonomous labs” that can analyze biological data in real time.
- Clario Acquisition - this is one of their biggest plays on AI and data. $TMO recently closed a $9.1 billion deal for Clario, a leader in clinical trial technology.
- Moreover, $TMO also launched the “Glacios 3 Cryo-TEM” is a more affordable electron microscope that uses AI to make protein imaging faster and easier.
We’re basically see the application of AI in real-time. Now it’s time to prove that AI is worth the investment…$TMO has a chance to showcase that.
Brief Financial Overview
Management raised TMO’s full year guidance, signaling confidence in a market recovery. They also noted "unusually clear visibility" into 2027 and 2028 due to massive "reshoring" contracts, agreements to build and manage drug manufacturing sites closer to home (U.S./Europe).
Threats
Regulatory changes, cuts in government funding, supply chain, acquisition synergy and tariffs are all headwinds that investors should lookout for. Right now, $TMO appears to be a good buy, but execution still matters…however their big moat and massive dominance in the industry may be able to overcome these headwinds if they come. We’ll update accordingly.
